Sodium Tripolyphosphate: Applications and Quality Standards Explained

Sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP, Na₅P₃O₁₀) is one of the most widely consumed inorganic phosphates globally, with annual demand exceeding 2 million metric tonnes. Its chelating, dispersing and buffering properties make it indispensable across multiple industries.

Primary Applications

  • Detergents & cleaning agents: STPP sequesters calcium and magnesium ions, improving surfactant efficiency and reducing scale formation.
  • Ceramics: Used as a deflocculant in ceramic slips to reduce viscosity and improve casting performance.
  • Food processing: Food-grade STPP (E451) is approved as a sequestrant, texturizer and moisture-retention agent in seafood, meat and dairy products.
  • Water treatment: Applied in boiler and cooling water systems to control scale and corrosion.
